Differential Effects of Surgical Suture Materials in 1,2-Dimethylhydrazine- induced Rat Intestinal Neoplasia1

چکیده
The incidence, distribution, size, and histopathology of rat small and large bowel tumors induced by sequential administra tion of 1,2-dimethylhydrazine followed by cecal placement of one of six differing types of suture materials were systematically examined. In addition, measurements of /3-glucuronidase activi ties in large bowel contents followed by fecal trace metal deter minations were done. The results indicate that specific slowly absorbed and nonabsorbable suture materials in the absence of a surgical anastomosis promote tumor induction locally in the rat cecum. In addition, cecal suture material composed of multifilament stainless steel wire enhanced tumor development at a "downstream" site in the distal colon, paralleling increased fecal /3-glucuronidase activities at this site and implicating a possible luminally mediated mechanism for colon tumor development in this animal model.

Glycoprotein Metabolism in Normal Proximal and Distal Rat Colon and Changes Associated with 1,2-Dimethylhydrazine-induced Colonie Neoplasia1
Glycoproteins are major components of secreted mucins as well as membranes of gastrointestinal mucosa! cells. Both qualitative and quantitative differences in mucosa! cell glycoproteins from different regions of the colon have been suggested by histochemical studies. Glycoprotein alterations have also been reported in hu man colon cancer. Since regional differences in glycoprotein synthesis are...

Intestinal tumors were induced by repeated subcutaneous injection of 1,2-dimethylhydrazine in Donryu strain rats for 28 weeks. A streptococcal preparation, OK-432 was administered at different times of the tumor induction_ Between the OK-432 treated and the untreated groups no significant difference was observed in the incidence of intestinal tumors, the total number of tumors per rat, the loca...

The fecal microflora enzymes, beta-glucuronidase and beta-glucosidase, as well as fecal bacterial counts, were examined during colon carcinogenesis in rats administered parenteral 1,2-dimethylhydrazine and fed nutritionally equivalent diets free of fiber or containing one of three single sources of dietary fiber (cellulose, hemicellulose, and pectin). Whereas pectin-fed animals had increased fe...

Background In this study, given the importance of gastrointestinal anastomosis in surgical procedures, attempts have been made to compare the results of employing magnetic compression anastomosis and magnetic coils in intestinal anastomosis of rats. Materials and Methods This study was an experimental trial on 60 rats which had been randomly divided into two experiment (30) and control (30) gro...
متن کاملComparison of Wistar vs. Fischer rat in the incidence of 1,2-dimethylhydrazine induced intestinal tumors
Background. Many investigators have observed differences in the susceptibility to induce intestinal tumors by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) between various strains of rodents. The results are difficult to compare because of the different regimes used for induction. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the influence of strain on DMH-induced intestinal tumors between Wistar and Fischer rats. Ma...
